How to Choose Workwear Fabric GSM: From Light Uniforms to Laminated and Industrial Textiles
GSM states fabric mass per square metre. It does not by itself prove abrasion resistance, strength, warmth, waterproofing or comfort. Review GSM with fibre content, construction, yarn, finish, garment design and the actual work environment.
Use weight bands as screening routes, not promises

Calculate and compare GSM correctly
GSM = specimen mass (g) ÷ specimen area (m²)
Example: a 100 cm² specimen has an area of 0.01 m². If it weighs 2.45 g, the result is 2.45 ÷ 0.01 = 245 g/m². For unit conversion, 1 oz/yd² is approximately 33.906 g/m², so 245 GSM is approximately 7.23 oz/yd².
Estimated roll mass (kg) = GSM × usable width (m) × length (m) ÷ 1,000
A 245 GSM fabric at 1.50 m usable width and 100 m length gives an estimated 36.75 kg before packaging, moisture and commercial tolerance. Condition and sample several locations instead of treating one small cutting as the entire lot.

Why equal GSM does not mean equal performance
Construction can redistribute mass
Two 245 GSM fabrics can use different yarn counts, weave density and cover. One may gain mass from a denser base textile; another may gain it from finish or coating.
Finishing can change the comparison
Water-repellent, coating, lamination or mechanical finishing can alter mass, stiffness, air permeability and laundering response. Record whether GSM is greige or finished.
A copy-ready review sequence
- Name the garment or end use and destination market.
- Record composition ratio, construction, GSM, width, color and finish.
- Define laundering or pretreatment before setting acceptance values.
- Ask for the current sample, lot reference and report scope.
- Review finished-garment construction separately from fabric-side data.
