UK buying brief

What to include before asking for a price.

A more complete brief reduces unsuitable samples and makes the first quotation discussion more useful.

Garment and work setting

Jacket, trouser, coverall or vest; construction, rail, utilities, logistics, roadwork or another application.

Material specification

Composition, construction, target GSM, colour direction, stretch, coating, lamination and laundering expectation.

Evidence boundary

Required standard, report colour, test scope and whether the request concerns fabric, components or finished-garment conformity.

Commercial inputs

Sample type, quantity range, delivery destination, target timing and whether repeat sourcing is expected.

Buyer resources

Use the relevant guide before sending a UK fabric enquiry.

These crawlable buyer guides explain rainwear standards, high-visibility fabric selection, reflective workwear material routes and waterproof-breathable evidence.

Important boundary

Fabric evidence does not certify the finished garment.

We can discuss available fabric-side specifications, report previews and document scope. Final garment conformity also depends on the garment design, fluorescent background area, retroreflective component placement, construction, marking and the applicable UK conformity process.

For rail procurement, tell us if a rail-industry specification such as RIS-3279-TOM applies so the request can be recorded separately. Do not assume a general orange fabric direction satisfies a rail contract.

UK context used for this sourcing page

  • HSE advises selecting high-visibility clothing for the actual risk, lighting, work and wearer.
  • BS EN ISO 20471 is a high-visibility warning clothing standard; the garment and its components must be reviewed within the relevant scope.
  • RSSB publishes RIS-3279-TOM for high-visibility clothing in the Great Britain rail context.

FAQ

Questions UK workwear buyers often ask first.

Can you provide BS EN ISO 20471 related fabric documents?

Available fabric-side reports or previews can be discussed by product code, tested colour and document scope. They do not by themselves certify a finished garment.

Can you supply fluorescent yellow and orange routes?

Yes, existing product directions include high-visibility yellow TC, yellow stretch, yellow Oxford and orange softshell options. Final colour values and suitability must be checked against the approved sample and project requirements.

Do you claim that a fabric is approved for UK rail use?

No blanket rail approval is claimed. If RIS-3279-TOM or a buyer-specific rail specification applies, identify it in the enquiry so fabric, component and finished-garment requirements can be kept separate.

What information is needed for a useful quotation?

Share the garment use, delivery country, target composition, GSM, colour, finish, quantity range, sample need, standard or test requirement and target timing.
